Olof Boman
A Swedish discovery: after completing his studies at the Royal Music School in Stockholm, Olof Boman was able to establish himself as one of Sweden’s most prolific and interesting conductors. He has enthusiastically devoted himself to the music of the 18th century and is well versed in crossing the divisions separating the genres of ancient and contemporary music.
Olof Boman has performed with many of Sweden’s best-known orchestras as a conductor, including the Gotenburg Symphony, the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, and the Norrlands Operan in Umeå. His work with internationally renowned choirs such as the Swedish Chamber Choir, the NDR Choir in Hamburg and the RIAS Chamber Choir in Berlin has also helped him establish his reputation as a specialist for vocal music, landing him regular invitations as an opera conductor. He was the musical director for numerous opera productions, including the Vadstena Akademie, where he has had a long-standing partnership. In the summer of 2008 he was the conductor of the much-praised production of L’opera seria by Florian Leopold Gassman at Stockholm’s Drottningholm Theater.
His passionate interest for 18th century music took him to studying harpsichord as well as focus on historical performance practice of Baroque and Classical music. This lead to working together with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin at the Köthen Bach Festival in 2006, where he stepped in for René Jacobs, as well as performances with the Akademie at the GLOGER festival in Kongsberg, Norway. In June 2009 Olof Boman directed Haydn’s marionette opera Philemon and Baucis at the Music Festival at Potsdam Sanssouci.
As the artistic director of the GLOGER Festival, together with Isa Gericke, Olof Boman is well known for coming up with unusually unique program ideas. For the festival in 2009 he developed a new oratorio incorporating the music of Georg Friedrich Handel together and the contemporary composer Thomas Jenefeld, which was performed together with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin.
