Concerto Italiano
Concerto Italiano began its activity in 1984 at Teatro Ghione in Rome with a concert performance of Francesco Cavalli's Calisto.
In twenty five years of concert activity all over the world the ensemble was able to renew the approach of the performance of Italian Music, especially in the case of Monteverdi and Vivaldi, at times suggesting models of execution which have become paradigmatic. In the case Bach, the ensemble has garnered approval even from the most demanding traditionalist public.
Today Concerto Italiano continues to pursue in its investigation of Italian musical culture an unceasing examination of a musical language which is evermore evidently and indissolubly linked to the cultural and linquistic values of 16th and 17th Italy.
As proof of their high level of musical and musicological competence achieved in recent years, Concerto Italiano and Rinaldo Alessandrini are currently (until 2014) performing the complete operas of Monteverdi, with stage direction by Robert Wilson, at Teatro all Scala in Milan and in co-production with Paris Opera.

Monteverdi – The first six books of madrigals:
From the first to the second practice
A selection of madrigals from books 1 to 6 illustrating the changes that Monteverdi’s style underwent in order to more firmly express the link between words and music.
Monteverdi - "La Notte e il Giorno"
A programme inspired by nocturnal settings in Monteverdi's celebrated madrigals, ("Hor, ch’el ciel e la terra" and "Combattimento"), followed by the description of dawn from "Ecco mormorar l’onde", and ballettos and madrigals to sing and dance at daylight.
Monteverdi – Solemn Vesper for Saint Mark’s feast
The reconstruction of a Vesper setting probably sung in the church of St. Mark’s in Venice, where Monteverdi held the position of cappellmeister, with the luxuriant sound of arrangements for 8 voices and 2 violins of psalms from Monteverdi’s "Selva Morale".
Sacred Music in Rome: Fabri, Melani, Scarlatti
The enormous number of churches in the city of Rome guaranteed exceptional compositional opportunities to its resident musicians. Thus Churches became almost like free concert halls where exquisite music was performed. During the 17th century, the renewal of musical language enabled composers such as Alessandro Scarlatti and Melani to create polished and expressive music works.
On and about "Stabat Mater"
Alessandro Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater, antecedent of Pergolesi’s better-known version, and Bach’s cantata BWV 51 (adjusting Pergolesi’s work to suit contemporary German taste) collected in one programme.
