Solistenensemble KALEIDOSKOP

The name is their program: their openness and the willingness to experiment characterizes this young and dynamic ensemble from Berlin whose members perform both as soloists and chamber musicians. Formed in 2006 by the cellist Michael Rauter and the conductor Julian Kuerti, Kaleidoskop’s members are equally versed in historical performance practice as well as in the performance of contemporary music. Under the direction of Michael Rauter contemporary works are contrasted against different musical epochs in order to show how they relate to each other, thereby allowing the ensemble to discover new forms of performance practice.

Often the ensemble works together with artists of other fields, including architects, dancers, actors, and light designers. Such productions have brought the group together with leading personalities, including Giovanni Sollima, Sasha Waltz, Roland Kluttig, Hendrik Müller, Alexander Charim, and Louise Wagner. Since April 2008 Kaleidoskop has been ensemble-in-residence at Radialsystem V in Berlin and in 2009 was invited to numerous festivals throughout Europe, including Lille 3000/Europe XXL, Festival Shared Sounds, and the Jüdische Kulturtage in Berlin. It also participated in Spring 2009 with Sasha Waltz & Guests and the Vocalconsort Berlin in Sasha Waltz’s Dialogue 09 at the Neue Museum Berlin. In 2009/2010 the ensemble will be performing at the Kurt Weil Festival in Dessau and the Thüringer Bachwochen. Also, it will be realizing the two-part concert installation Fluktation 09 at Radialsystem, a project that has been sponsored by the Berlin Hauptstadtkulturfonds.

Their first recording, released in 2008 by Sony, featured new music by the cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima. It was immediately followed by a critically acclaimed recording of piano concertos by Joseph Haydn, performed by the pianist Caspar Frantz. A CD of Bach’s violin concertos performed and directed by the concertmistress and Bach prize-winner Elfa Rún Krisitinsdóttir is about being realized.
