The success of Dido & Aeneas established a new form of musical theater: the choreographed opera. Taking once again material from mythology to create a work for the modern dance ensemble Sasha Waltz & Guests and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Medea, based on Pascal Dusapin’s 1991 opera Medeamatrial, was developed. For the opera, which uses period instruments as the basis for the musical-choreographic confrontation, Sasha Waltz once again incorporates both the dancers and the singers into the action.
The interpretation of the mythological material allowed Sasha Waltz to incorporate all of her artistic talents: the antique world is reflected in frieze-like group formations, using the archaic picture language to integrate the vocabulary of the movements and thereby create narrative references. At the central point of her efforts is the combination of older as well as modern interpretations of the drama, which contrasts the portrayal of Meda as a revengeful fury who ends up murdering her own children. Christa Wolf’s novel Medeastimmen offers important impulses too, allowing Sasha Waltz to focus on the female power of a healer and a mother, thereby emphasizing the tension between the creative and destructive powers of Medea.
The lead role of Medea is sung by coloratura soprano Caroline Stein, who is supported by the members of the Vocalconsort Berlin and the Akademie für Alte Musik under the direction of Marcus Creed.

A Production by Sasha Waltz and Guests in co-production with Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg as part of Capital of Culture Luxembourg 2007, and Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin.
